Welcome to PaleoRadiology Meets Archaeology 5

We are pleased to invite you to the fifth edition of PaleoRadiology Meets Archaeology, taking place in Zagreb, Croatia, from December 5th to 8th, 2025.

This international event will be structured in two parts:

  • Hands-on Workshop |  December 5th – 7th
  • Conference Day |  December 8th  (with in-person and online attendance options)

Workshop Overview

The Hands-on PaleoRadiology Workshop is designed to introduce and enhance the use of radiological techniques among bioarchaeologists and anthropologists. Participants are encouraged to bring their own material for scanning and will gain practical experience with X-raymobile X-rayCTmicro-CT, and post-processing methods.

Conducted over three days in both clinical and field settings, the workshop offers an immersive, applied approach to the integration of radiology in archaeological and anthropological research.

On December 8th, join us for the PaleoRadiology Conference, held in Krapina with the possibility of attending online. This event will bring together researchers, professionals, and enthusiasts to share and discuss the latest developments in the radiographic analysis of ancient human and animal remains.

Fabio Cavalli

Fabio Cavalli

Dott. Cavalli graduated in Medicine and Surgery at University of Siena in 1978 and postgraduated in General Radiology in 1982. In 1988 co-founded the Academy of Medieval Studies “Jaufré Rudel” in Gradisca d’Isonzo and he is it’s actual President and Director of Research group of History of Medicine and Bioarchaeology. From 1999 he teaches “History of Medicine” and from 2015 “Forensic Anthropology and Radiology”  at University of Trieste. In the years 2017 and 2018 teached “Facial Reconstruction in mummiology”, Specialization course of Mummiology, University of Pisa.

Fabrice Dedouit

Fabrice Dedouit

Fabrice Dedouit is a French radiologist, forensic pathologist at the Rangueil-Larrey Toulouse Hospital. He is past president of International Society of Forensic Radiology and Imaging. He started his radiology residency in 2000 and forensic pathology residency in 2004 at the University Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France). His research activities are performed in the laboratory AMIS (Molecular Anthropology and Image Synthesis) at the University Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France). Since 2004 he published more than 110 publications and 16 chapters of books in the field of forensic sciences.

Katherine van Schaik

Katherine van Schaik

Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, with a focus on Musculoskeletal Imaging at Vanderbilt University Medical Center / Adjoint Assistant Professor of Classical and Mediterranean Studies

Prof. van Schaik investigates  questions involving disease and medical decision making in the ancient (Greek, Roman, Islamic) and modern worlds; interdisciplinary methodologies in history of medicine research, including historical and textual analysis, bioarchaeology, paleoradiology and emerging techniques for studying human remains in past populations; anthropology and medical humanities; and medical ethics.

Matea Prenc

Matea Prenc

Matea Prenc is radiologist at the University Hospital Centre Sisters of Charity and also serves as a teaching assistant at the School of Dental Medicine. She is currently pursuing a PhD degree at the University of Zagreb, focusing on imaging findings of temporomandibular joint arthrosis. She has published several articles, presented research at numerous international conferences, and holds memberships in national and European scientific societies related to radiology and neuroradiology.

Nataša Šarkić

Nataša Šarkić -- Bioarchaeologist | Founder of Aita Bioarchaeology

Dr. Nataša Šarkić is the founder of the company Aita Bioarchaeology. She earned her degree in Archaeology from the University of Belgrade, followed by a Master’s and PhD in Physical Anthropology at the Autonomous University of Madrid. She has extensive experience in both field excavation and laboratory analysis, working with inhumations, cremations, mummifications, and ossuaries across diverse chronologies—from the Paleolithic to the Spanish Civil War.

Mislav Čavka

Mislav Čavka

Mislav is a radiology specialist, with European (ESSR) diploma in musculoskeletal radiology, at University Hospital Centre „Zagreb“, the largest hospital in Croatia. He has been publishing articles in paleoradiology for past 17 years starting with the project of Radiological analysis of mummified parts from Egyptian Collection of Archeological Museum in Zagreb. He published over 70 scientific articles, 150 scientific abstracts and 13 book chapters on radiology, paleoradiology and history of medicine so far. He is the founder of Paleoradiology workshop and Paleoradiology meets Archeology meeting.

Ivan Jerković

Ivan Jerković

Ivan Jerković is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Forensic Sciences, University of Split, where he leads the Department of Interdisciplinary Sciences and the Crime Scene Investigation program. His research explores applications of data science and AI in forensic disciplines, with a focus on forensic anthropology, trace evidence, and advanced imaging. He promotes methodological rigor, reproducibility, and the integration of computational tools in forensic education and practice.

Željana Bašić

Željana Bašić

Željana Bašić is a professor at the Faculty of Forensic Sciences, University of Split (Croatia), and head of the Laboratory for Forensic and Biological Anthropology. Holding a PhD in Biomedicine and an MSc in Chemical Technology, she integrates forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, imaging, and 3D technologies to advance human identification and heritage preservation. Her research on biological profiling and ethics, along with her public engagement and student mentorship, has earned awards for excellence in research and teaching.

Elvira Krešić

Elvira Krešić

Elvira Krešić is an interventional radiologist at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb. She holds both the European Diploma in Interventional Radiology and the European Diploma in Radiology. She earned her PhD from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine with a research focus combining radiology and forensic anthropology. Her main areas of interest include interventional radiology, interventional oncology, musculoskeletal imaging, and forensic anthropology.
